The Departments of Languages of Government Degree College Bishnah, under the aegis of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organized a One-Day International Seminar in hybrid mode to commemorate International Mother Language Day 🌸. The seminar provided a global academic platform for dialogue on linguistic diversity and cultural heritage. The programme was conducted in both offline and online formats 💻, enabling wide national and international participation. Renowned poet, writer, and dramatist Jenab Jamshed Masroor from Norway graced the occasion as the Chief Guest through an online Zoom session. In his address, he eloquently highlighted the emotional, cultural, and historical significance of mother languages and their vital role in preserving identity and heritage across cultures. Five distinguished academicians from various degree colleges of the Jammu region were invited as Guests of Honour: • Dr. Snobar, Associate Professor of Punjabi from Government Degree College Ramgarh • Dr. Joginder Singh, Associate Professor of Dogri from Government Degree College Samba • Prof. Balwan Singh, Associate Professor of Hindi from Government College of Education Canal Road • Prof. Afpan Ali, Assistant Professor of Urdu from Government Degree College Reasi • Shri Mohinder Kumar, Scholar from the Department of Sanskrit All the speakers emphasized the importance of mother language and the urgent need to preserve mother tongues in order to safeguard cultural identity and ensure the contemporary relevance of regional languages. The scholarly deliberations reflected the true spirit of unity in diversity 🇮🇳. Prof. Kashab Sharma, Head of the Department of History, also shared his reflections on the love for one’s mother tongue, emphasizing that since ancient times, the cultural strength and historical continuity of a region have largely depended upon the vitality of its language, which forms the backbone of regional identity. Principal Dr. Shallu Samyal appreciated the initiative of the Language Departments and IQAC, highlighting that such multilingual academic platforms foster inclusivity, cultural harmony, and holistic education 🌿. The seminar was further enriched by the gracious presence of senior faculty member Dr. Vasudha Choudhary. Faculty members and students of the college participated enthusiastically in the event. The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Koshal Kiran Thacker, Head of the Department of Urdu, while the proceedings were conducted by Dr. Kusum, Head of the Department of Punjabi. Adding a vibrant cultural dimension 🎭, students presented poetry in different mother languages, symbolizing India’s rich linguistic diversity. The event concluded with a formal Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Ekta Rani from the Department of Hindi. The programme was successfully coordinated by Prof. Shrotika Rajput, Convener, IQAC, with the active support of the teaching and non-teaching staff of the college.
